Lucy Grace Quaintance was born on 17 March 1852 in Flemingsburg, Fleming Co., Kentucky.1 She was the daughter of William Southard Quaintance and Martha Cunningham Darnall.2,3 Lucy Grace Quaintance married Lewis Dixon Gordon, son of Peter Gordon and Clarissa Berry Loyd, on 4 December 1877 in Flemingsburg.1 Lucy Grace Quaintance and Lewis Dixon Gordon lived between 1878 and 1887 in Fleming Co., Kentucky. The house on the Elizaville Rd. is still standing today, and has been restored to much of its original condition.4 Lucy Grace Quaintance and Lewis Dixon Gordon lived from 1887 to 1892 in Lamar, Barton Co., Missouri. Peter Gordon owned land near Lamar and Lewis moved his family there to work on it as a partner, splitting the profits with Peter. The land consisted of about 170 acres, part of which was referred to as the "Gulf lot." Lewis made numerous improvements on the property, including building a house. He raised hay and also some cattle. Peter made occasional visits to the area, staying as long as six months at a time. When Peter died unexpectedly during a visit in 1891, the disposition of his estate required that the property be sold. Lewis and Grace then returned to Fleming Co. in early 1892.5,6 Lucy Grace Quaintance and Lewis Dixon Gordon lived in 1900 in 834 West Seventh St., Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio.7 Lucy Grace Quaintance and Lewis Dixon Gordon lived after 1900 in 1809 Madison Ave., Covington, Campbell Co., Kentucky.8,9 Lucy Grace Quaintance died on 22 February 1932 in Covington, Campbell Co., Kentucky, at age 79.1 She was buried in Flemingsburg Cemetery, Fleming Co., Kentucky.1

She was moved when the Ringo cemetery was threatened due to flooding.10 Grace had a reputation for being very energetic and ambitious, and also rather eccentric. At 75 years of age, she decided to go back for a visit to Virginia with a party that was preparing to make the journey. She climbed onto a four-year-old stallion at the Court House steps in Flemingsburg and rode it all the way to Culpepper, Virginia and back, showing no more fatigue than the rest of the group. Shortly afterwards, she rode to Maysville on horseback to bring back some apples newly arrived from upriver, planted the seeds, and eventually ate the apples from a large orchard grown from them.11
