Sir Walter Stewart was also known as 6th Great Steward of Scotland. He was born circa 1292. He was the son of Sir James Stewart and Jill De Burgh. Sir Walter Stewart married Marjory Bruce, daughter of King Robert Bruce and Isabella Mar, in 1315. Sir Walter Stewart died on 9 April 1327. He commanded the left wing of the Scottish army at Bannockburn in 1314. He also led forces under Robert Bruce on many raids against England, including a raid into York in 1322 when they almost captured King Edward II.

Sir James Douglas was the son of Sir William Douglas and Elizabeth Stewart. Sir James Douglas was also known as The Black Douglas. He died in 1330 in Spain. He was a favored companion of Robert the Bruce, and fought in all the major engagements of the times. He died in Spain against the Moors while carrying Bruce's heart on a journey to the Holy Land. The heart was recovered and is buried at Melrose Abbey.
