     John Hampton was born in 1640 in Elphingstoun, East Lothian County, Scotland.1 He was the son of Rev. Thomas Hampton. John Hampton married Martha (?) before 1668. John Hampton married Katherine Cloudsley on 17 December 1675 in Elphingstoun, East Lothian County. John Hampton married Martha Brown on 3 March 1686/87 in Shrewsbury, New Jersey. John Hampton married Jean Curtis circa 1698. He was a Quaker sent by Robert Barclay as a gardener and overseer of his lands in the East Jersey Colony in the 1680's. He became a prominent member of the Scots community in Monmouth Co. There is a monument with his name on it at the Old Scots cemetery near Freehold.2 John Hampton died on 23 January 1702 in Monmouth County, New Jersey.

She was a Quaker who became a Presbyterian and founder of the Old Tennent Church near Freehold. Legend has it that while the elders were debating the location, she picked up the cornerstone, carried it to its present location, exclaiming, "Wha ever heard o' ganging doon to the House o' the Lord, an no o' ganging oop to the House o' the Lord?"2
